Guy Van Asten

Obituary of Guy William Van Asten

Guy William Van Asten, 65, of St. Petersburg, Florida, died October 29, 2023, at his home.

Guy was born June 26, 1958, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, to Joseph C. Van Asten and Elizabeth A. Nickless, where he went to St. Mary Springs High School. He is survived by his two sons: Joseph (Kristen) Van Asten, Brian (Lauren) Van Asten; grandchildren: Joey, Graham, Kinsley, and Cal; three sisters: Patricia Essmann, Cecelia Jones, and Roxanne; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends. Guy is preceded in death by his father, mother, Francis (brother), and Christine Strebe (sister).

A beloved member of the USF St. Petersburg community for over 21 years, Guy left an indelible impact on the campus and felt immense pride in working with incredibly talented people dedicated to making USF St. Petersburg an extraordinary community. Prior to joining USF, Guy retired from the U.S. Coast Guard as a Chief Warrant Officer having served 21 years. Public service was the common denominator throughout both of his careers. That is where Guy found fulfillment and purpose and where his skills and talents shone brightest.

Guy will always be remembered as a kind, good-hearted man with a warm smile and a genuine passion for exploring and making the world around him better. He will be missed beyond measure, but his desire to build meaningful relationships with those he encountered leaves behind a tangible legacy where his presence and impact can be found within his family, friends, and communities that he loved so deeply.

A tribute to the life of Guy Van Asten will be held on November 7, 2023, at the USF St. Petersburg Student Center Ballroom. An honor ceremony will be held at Bay Pines National Cemetery on a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Guy's honor to the USF St. Petersburg Veterans Services Support Fund (fund #PV0008)
